The sad news of passing broke on August 14th, 2022 when it was reported that manga artist Makino Keiichi passed away at the age of 84 years old from stomach cancer, according to Yomiuri Shimbun Newspaper.

Makino Keiichi was born on November 1, 1937, in Aichi prefecture. After his experience as an animator and a TV commercial storyboard artist, he established the Makino Production in 1964 with Shima Mitsuru.

From March 1976, he published political manga in the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper until 1991.

From 1994 to 2006, he served as a professor at Kyoto Seika University, the institution known to be the front-runner of manga education in Japan. Kyoto Seika University has the Faculty of Manga and the Graduate School of Manga. With the help of his effort as an educator and researcher, the Faculty of Manga has grown larger. It currently offers four main courses including Cartoon Course and Story Manga Course as noted in the Real Sound article.

From 2006 to 2008, Makino Keiichi served as the president of the Manga Club at Kyoto Seika University. After 2008, he became the professor emeritus at the above university, while becoming the Director at the International Manga Research Center in Kyoto.

According to Omote Tomoyuki of the Kitakyushu Manga Museum, Makino Keiichi put a lot of endeavor into establishing the Japan Society for Studies in Cartoons and Comics (JSSCC) and served as the very first secretary-general of the organization. He also lent his hands to establishing Kyoto International Manga Museum.

Makino Keiichi, who was also a friend of Tezuka Osamu (“The Godfather of Manga”), was truly a pioneer of his time and brought many innovations to the manga industry as a whole. He will be sorely missed by many authors and readers alike. May he rest in peace.
